What to do on a short trip to Saigon

Treats at TIB Express

I'm a huge fan of the Asian city mini-break. Eating, drinking, shopping and jaunting around a cool metropolis, with a smattering of obligatory sightseeing thrown in - what's not to love?! For those similarly enamoured with such breaks and perhaps planning a Saigon version, check out this piece I recently wrote for About.com's Southeast Asia Travel site. It's always hard to narrow down a great selection of restaurants, bars, shops and sites for one short itinerary but the article hopefully captures a little slice of Saigon's 'best of'!

  1. I enjoyed reading your published Weekend in Saigon...very well done. Congrats...You should consider submitting to the New York Times Travel section. Great Job
I did find $ 120/night to be pricey for a Hotel in Saigon but you certainly offer an alternative @ $ 30 which is great.
    Cheers

  2. Nice article. Am I right to assume the recommendations aren't day of the week specific? We'll be in Saigon for 3 nights, but not over a weekend. Are most restaurants open 7 days? Or is there a common day of the week to be closed, like Sunday?

BTW, I'll be in Hanoi, Hoi An and Saigon in (the first 2 weeks of) July too. Perhaps our paths will cross?

  3. Thanks so much Baron! And NY Times seems like a bit of a pipedream but thanks for the encouragement!

Kristina - I wrote it as a weekend itinerary but it can definitely be applied to any day of the week. Places here are generally open 7 days, which is great. And send me an email re/ your trip dates, it would be fun to catch up and put a face to the blog :-). I'll be travelling in Hanoi and Hoi An during that time, coincidentally, so we'll see when we're in the same place at the same time!

  4. Vietnam wasn't on my radar on places I want to visit soon but after discovering your blog, I have seen the light. :)

We plan to go to Angkor Wat next year. Any tips on good accommodation for family with young kids?

  5. Hi Amy - accom. with kids in Siem Reap (to see Angkor Wat) - depending on budget, Hotel de la Paix is a great high end option mainly because of the excellent pool. It's huge with many different sections/offshoots/nooks and crannies; kids seem to love it. A mid-range option with nice grounds and a pool is the Day Inn, which is a very short tuk tuk ride to town and around the corner from the FCC. Hope that helps!
